More Than Mentoring: How Rise High Impacts Young Professionals

When people think about Rise High, they often think of the incredible opportunities it creates for students – but there’s another side to the story: the impact the program has on the volunteers who show up each week.

Many of our young professional mentors work at regional STEM leaders like Regeneron, GlobalFoundries, GE Vernova, and GE Aerospace. Often new to the area, they’re looking for ways to get involved, meet people, and build connections outside of work. At Rise High, they find all of that and more.

Through weekly interactions with students and fellow mentors, volunteers become part of a welcoming community of STEM professionals, educators, and lifelong learners. Friendships are formed, professional networks grow, and many volunteers discover a sense of purpose through mentoring.

What makes the experience especially rewarding is seeing the direct impact they have on students’ lives. Rise High students have the unique opportunity to connect with real STEM professionals, ask questions about college, careers, and life after graduation. They gain valuable insight into potential career paths too. 

At Rise High, volunteering is about much more than giving back. It’s about building community, creating meaningful connections, and making a lasting difference – for students and mentors alike. Our mentors often get a front-row seat to students’ growth and achievements, watching them gain confidence, discover new interests, and make decisions about their futures. For many students, these relationships become a trusted source of guidance and inspiration, choosing colleges, majors, and career paths inspired by the mentors who encouraged them along the way.

Our volunteers aren’t just teaching STEM concepts – they’re helping students envision what’s possible for their futures. That’s what makes Rise High special: everyone who walks through the door leaves with something valuable.
